Also known as Iron Goddess of Mercy, Ti Kuan Yin comes from Fujian, in the Anhui province of China. Legend has it that this tea gained its prestigious distinction when the Chinese emperor came down with an almost incurable condition. A variety of herbalists and shamans came from all across the land in an attempt to offer the emperor with a cure. With no avail, the emperor’s saving grace was an advisor to the court who gave him some oolong tea from his native region. Upon drinking the tea, the emperor was cured almost instantaneously. The emperor bestowed upon the tea the name Iron Goddess of Mercy because he believed the leaves resembled iron and possessed the healing powers of Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. This medium oxidized oolong displays a bold, robust character from fire-roasting, while maintaining a rich, buttery, and wonderfully complex flavor and aroma.
